Strawberry Report July 7th, 2009

After looking through the fields we are still finding strawberries that will be ripening the over the weekend. With cool weather and the rain, the berries are slowly turning from green to red.  So far we have had just the right number of people show up to pick.  Everyone was able to find enough; most people pick about 4 quarts. Some of the "picking teams" that came picked 12 quarts.  Here comes the rain.... I hope that global warming will cause some warming in Vermont soon!

Late season strawberries pull through at Littlewood Farm

Our fields our busy today with pickers, the sun is out and it is starting to feel like it is really summer. Some of our pickers are having a hard time finding ripe berries but they say there are many green berries "ripening while they pick". Pending sunshine we will have a lot more berries later in the week.

Picking is open 8am-noon everyday

Call 802-552-4552

The berries this year are crisp and but very juicy inside. I think the texture comes from the weather the berries have been exposed to this season: Rain, Rain and more Rain. It would be interesting to research what types of strawberries grow best in Vermont.
At little wood farm we are growing three different types: Jewel, Cavendish and Cabot. We purchase our strawberries from Nourse Farm located in South Deerfield, MA.

Wow the sun is out! The strawberries are ripening up!

The weather report for the next fews day looks good. We are hope that the warm sun will make the strawberry season will turn around.
