We are closed for the day. The field is too wet. The picking will be better tomorrow. We are hoping for some warmer weather to ripen up the strawberries. Call for a more up to date strawberry report: 802-552-4552
Pick Your own strawberries continues at Littlewood Farm. This morning, Thursday 7/2/09, there are folks in their raincoats out there in a steady light rain. The weather forecast looks wet for tomorrow as well, but the weekend hopefully will be drier. Maybe the sun will appear.
We have a small crop of good tasting berries, about half of what we had last year. It takes about 45 minutes to an hour to fill a 6 qt tray. If you are after a quantity of berries you will do better earlier in the day.
There are a lot of good looking small green berries yet to fill out and ripen, so we expect to be pick right through the weekend and into next week.
We will be open every day 8 am until noon.
Call our new farm hotline (802) 552-4552 for the up to date report.

Strawberry season has begun here at Littlewood Farm. We have been picking the early variety, Cavendish, since Monday. Pints are available at Hunger Mountain Coop in Montpelier, Plainfield Coop and Maple Valley Café in Plainfield, and LACE in Barre.
We are opening for Pick Your Own on Sunday, June 28th. We will be open daily from 8 am to Noon. Best times for really big picks will be the middle of next week through the Fourth of July weekend. The Jewel variety will be ready then as well as the Cavendish.
Overall, it looks to be a good but not great season, since we lost a set of early blossoms to irrigation troubles on a late freezing night. We won't really know until it is all over, about the 12th of July.
Hope to see you, with your kids and friends, down here at the end of Recreation Field road in Plainfield. Please, leave your dog at home.
Our PYO prices are $4.50 per qt, $25 for a 6 qt flat.
Thanks to all the gardeners who shopped at our greenhouse this spring. It was fun to see so many families growing big gardens this season. I hope I choose the right tomato and pepper varieties for you. Let me know how your garden is doing when you come by for strawberries.
Our sale is over for now. Call me at 454-8466 if you are looking for something in particular, or just take a chance and stop by. We still have some peppers and tomatoes, melons, herbs and flowers. There will be fall cabbage and broccoli plugs ready in two weeks. There are many beautiful hanging baskets still, at only $15 each.
Speaking of strawberries, seems they are on many people's minds this time of year. Our crop is maturing slowly in this cool weather and looks to be ready for Pick Your Own around the 27th of June. We will have berries in Hunger Mt. Coop, Plainfield Coop, and LACE – Farm Fresh Market soon, hopefully by the 22nd. Overall it looks to be a good crop, but definitely late. Unless the weather really warms up soon, the bulk of our berries will be ripe in July this year.
We are using this time before the strawberry picking begins to continue with our planting and weeding, keeping up well with both. See you all later in the month.
Joey Klein
The last few nights it has been frosting on the farm. Our farm manager Joey Klein has had watch temperatures through out the night in order to protect the strawberries. If the temperature becomes close to 32F the ingratiation system can be started. The strawberries look in good shape. We have irrigated through two frosty nights so far to protect the buds, and the early fruit set looks strong. The crew has done a good job of weeding, there is plenty of mulch , and very little leaf disease. We may begin picking as early as June 20th for store sales, about a week after that for PYO.
We expect a busy weekend in the greenhouse, as the tomatoes are ready to go out. Peppers and eggplants need warmer weather before going out, but the seedlings are ready to start hardening up on your porch on a nice day, coming in at night. Melons need another week or two in the greenhouse. Cukes, zukes and summer squash are ready to go. Lots of nice flower seedlings, and our hanging baskets are starting to bloom.
